Brookfield Secures $2 Billion First Close for Saudi-Anchored Middle East Private Equity Fund

On a crisp July day, Brookfield Asset Management announced that it had closed its first round of capital for Brookfield Middle East Partners (BMEP), a new private‑equity vehicle set to invest in companies across Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East. The fund raised roughly $2 billion, with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) serving as the anchor investor.

The announcement came from Brookfield’s chief executive, Bruce Flatt, who said the partnership offers a “compelling opportunity to partner with businesses across the region and position them for long‑term growth.” PIF’s deputy governor for MENA investments, Yazeed A. Al‑Humied, added that the collaboration aims to “anchor international private equity into Saudi Arabia and the region, accelerate deal flow, and bring world‑class expertise to the local capital market ecosystem.”

BMEP will target buyouts, minority growth equity and other private‑equity opportunities in sectors such as financial services, business services, consumer services, industrials, technology and healthcare. Brookfield has earmarked about half of the fund’s investments for Saudi Arabia, aligning with the kingdom’s Vision 2030 push to attract foreign capital and deepen its financial markets.

PIF’s participation follows a memorandum of understanding signed earlier in the year that positioned the sovereign wealth fund as a strategic anchor investor. The PIF, which manages assets of roughly $900 billion, has increasingly sought global partnerships to diversify its portfolio and broaden financing options for Saudi businesses.

Brookfield will contribute $500 million of its own capital to the fund and will launch the Brookfield Academy in Saudi Arabia to provide professional development and learning opportunities for industry participants. The firm has been active in the region since 2015 and currently manages more than $16 billion in regional assets, covering private equity, real estate and infrastructure.

The fund’s first close follows a broader trend of international investors looking to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets for high‑growth opportunities. By allocating 50 % of its capital to Saudi companies, BMEP seeks to support the kingdom’s diversification agenda while offering local firms access to global expertise and capital.

Brookfield’s move also reflects the firm’s strategy to deepen its footprint in emerging markets. The company’s global alternative‑asset platform, which was spun off from Brookfield Corporation in 2022 and now manages over $1 trillion in assets, has been expanding its Middle East presence through targeted investment vehicles.

The first close of BMEP is a significant milestone for both Brookfield and PIF, signalling a strengthened partnership that could accelerate private‑equity activity in the region. The fund will now begin sourcing deals and deploying capital in accordance with its investment mandate.

The current status is that BMEP has secured commitments from PIF and other institutional investors, and the fund is poised to start investing in the coming months. Further details on the fund’s investment timeline and target companies will be released as the partnership progresses.
