Israeli Lt. Col. Dor Ben Simhon Killed in Southern Lebanon; Northern Command Mourns Fallen Commander

At the crack of dawn on Friday, a sudden strike on a battalion tank in southern Lebanon took the life of Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the fatal incident occurred at about 12:20 a.m. when a tank belonging to the 52nd Battalion of the 401st “Iron Tracks” Armored Brigade was hit by a suspicious aerial target near the village of Tibnin. Whether the attack was carried out by an explosive drone remains unconfirmed.

Ben Simhon, 32, had assumed command of the 52nd Battalion roughly two months earlier, stepping in after the previous commander was severely wounded in combat. Prior to that, he served as chief of staff to Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin, the former head of the Northern Command, before returning to the front lines to lead the battalion during Operation “Northern Arrows.” His career in the Armor Corps included a succession of command posts that culminated in his leadership of the 52nd Battalion.

The strike also claimed the lives of three other IDF soldiers. The identities of the fallen soldiers have not yet been released for publication.

Ben Simhon’s funeral was held at Kibbutz Beit HaShita, where he was laid to rest. The ceremony drew senior defense officials, including major generals and Mossad Director Roman Gofman. In his eulogy, Gordin said: “Very few words, immense action. You possessed a devotion second to none. Always with an angelic smile that symbolized strength and hope. You were the embodiment of everything a leader should be.” He added, “The residents of the north may not know it, but they owe you an immense debt of gratitude. I hope that fatal blow did not cause you even a second of suffering. I loved you as a commander, as a close officer, and as an older brother. Even though I hold the rank of Major General, I have no answer for your mother, who has lost her beloved son, her most precious treasure.” Gordin concluded: “I promise that we will continue to walk in your path and uphold your legacy. You were the salt of the earth, the best of the best. I salute you, my brother.”

The Northern Command, headquartered in Safed, oversees all IDF units between Hermon and Netanya and is tasked with guarding Israel’s northern borders with Syria and Lebanon. In recent months, the command has intensified operations in southern Lebanon to secure the border and facilitate the safe return of residents evacuated from communities near the frontier.

The IDF has stated that the incident is under investigation. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the aerial target was a drone or another type of weapon. The event comes amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with the IDF continuing to conduct combat operations in the area.

Ben Simhon’s death is a significant loss for the Israeli military. He was widely regarded as a capable and devoted officer, and his funeral and the remarks from senior commanders underscore the impact of his leadership on the battalion and the broader Northern Command.

The IDF reiterated its commitment to protecting northern residents and maintaining security along the Lebanon border. The investigation into the fatal strike will determine the exact circumstances and any potential changes to operational procedures.

As the IDF continues its operations in southern Lebanon, the loss of Ben Simhon and his fellow soldiers highlights the ongoing risks faced by Israeli forces in the region and the importance of maintaining vigilance against aerial threats.

The current situation remains under investigation, with the IDF expected to release further details as the inquiry progresses.
