Iran Prepares State Funeral for Late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei Amid Ongoing Regional Tensions

In a statement delivered on Saturday at a committee meeting in Hamedan Province, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hamidreza Hajibabaei outlined the schedule and significance of the state funeral for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a U.S.–Israeli strike on February 28, 2026.

Hajibabaei said the public farewell ceremonies would serve as a “maneuver of Iran’s national, political and international authority.” He added that the funeral would be a manifestation of the continuation of the Islamic Revolution and the spirit of Ashura, and that it should be conducted in a manner that welcomes people of all backgrounds.

According to the Deputy Speaker, the mourning period will begin on July 4 with a public farewell ceremony at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran. The ceremony will run through July 5. Funeral processions are scheduled for July 6 in Tehran and July 7 in Qom. The final rites will take place on July 9 in Mashhad, where Khamenei will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza.

Hajibabaei urged relevant committees to prepare for the large crowds expected to travel to Mashhad, Qom and Tehran. He noted that the mass presence of Iranians at the funeral of former military commander Major General Qassem Soleimani had demonstrated how such ceremonies can act as a “healing medicine” for the nation.

Khamenei, who had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, was the longest‑serving head of state in West Asia. He had overseen the country’s transformation into a regional power, expanded its nuclear program, and directed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. His death followed a strike that also killed several members of his household.

The funeral dates were confirmed by state media on June 13, 2026. The ceremony schedule aligns with the traditional practice of holding state funerals in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad, the city of Khamenei’s birth.

The 2026 Iran war, sparked by the U.S.–Israeli strike, has left the region in a state of heightened tension. Iran has retaliated with strikes on U.S. and Israeli targets and has imposed restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz. The funeral will therefore take place against a backdrop of ongoing military confrontations and diplomatic uncertainty.

In addition to the official schedule, the Deputy Speaker highlighted the importance of maintaining order during the ceremonies. He called on security forces to manage the crowds and prevent potential unrest. The funeral is expected to draw millions of mourners, as it did for Soleimani.

The state funeral will also serve as a platform for the Iranian government to reaffirm its ideological commitments. The Deputy Speaker emphasized that the ceremonies would reinforce the principles of the Islamic Revolution and the leadership’s legacy.

The funeral proceedings will be broadcast nationwide, allowing Iranians who cannot attend in person to participate. The event is expected to be a significant moment of national mourning and a demonstration of Iran’s resilience amid external pressures.

The final burial in Mashhad will take place at the shrine of Imam Reza, a site of great religious significance. The burial will be conducted in accordance with Shia funeral rites, with the body wrapped in a simple white shroud.

The funeral and burial of Ayatollah Khamenei will conclude on July 9, marking the end of a 36‑year tenure that shaped Iran’s domestic and foreign policy. The ceremonies are expected to leave a lasting impression on the nation’s collective memory.

The state funeral will be a key event in Iran’s political calendar, reflecting the country’s ongoing struggle to balance internal governance with external threats. The ceremonies will also underscore the enduring influence of the Islamic Revolution in contemporary Iranian society.

The funeral proceedings are scheduled to proceed as outlined, with the final burial taking place in Mashhad on July 9. The Iranian government has indicated that the ceremonies will be conducted with the highest level of security and organization.

The state funeral of Ayatollah Khamenei will serve as a reminder of the nation’s recent history and its future trajectory amid a complex regional environment.
